And the winner is!

And the winner is... Tabatha Hansen!

Thanks so much to everyone who participated in the blog hop! I enjoyed each and every one of your responses! It's always my pleasure to share my little corner of the world with everyone, so please feel free to stop by any time, you can follow this blog or join my new Goodreads Group I Am ZAM... (yeah. Look for my newest book, Gasp! Coming from Loose Id September 4th:

Jeff Paxton came home from Afghanistan looking for roots. Instead his pregnant sister talks him into a job babysitting the volatile megastar Nigel Gasp. Nigel is stubborn, needy, and determined to be the center of attention everywhere he goes. Before long, Jeff realizes that something is bothering Gasp, and that keeping him out of trouble might be more difficult than he thought.

Nigel never planned on getting old. He simply assumed a hard drinking, hard partying lifestyle would take care of that. Now that he's turning forty, he's depressed and a little bit desperate. To Nigel, forty seems like a fine age to deposit his DNA and check out while he's still on top.

The last thing Jeff needs is to fall in love with Nigel Gasp. The last thing Nigel expects is a whole new reason to live. But how can Jeff put down roots with a man who is never in the same place twice?

Love can be shocking. Gasp!

I don't suppose I started out with the idea to write GLBTQ literature. The first time I ever really thought about it was back in about 1984-ish when I was going to college and working the phones at a local department store. To amuse myself between calls, I often had a book with me. A friend of mine gave me two of Rita Mae Brown's books, The Rubyfruit Jungle and Sudden Death. I liked the books very much except as an avid reader of romance, I wanted them to have a traditional romance novel ending -- I wanted my happily-ever-after.

The more I read, the more I realized there might be a place for a traditional romance novel with characters who happen to be GLBT. I guess I thought it might be good to write novels where sexuality is simply a characteristic of the protagonist and not necessarily a major part of the conflict of the story.

This was probably a completely naive and half-cocked (no pun intended) idea on my part. It's certainly proven more complicated than that. But I know, I remember exactly how I felt the first time someone wrote a romance novel featuring a zaftig heroine with thick glasses. That was me. And like all people who project themselves into the fantasy of a novel, and especially a romance, it was a pleasure to see myself there.

Of course that's an oversimplification. Life interfered and I went on to have kids and never really gave writing those novels a whole lot more thought -- that is,  until my children challenged me to do it in about 2007. It coincided with my first exposure to manga and anime, to yaoi, or Japanese boylove novels and I thought again, maybe the time is right. At any rate, the time was right for me.

Suffice it to say I love love stories. I love romance, and I believe everyone deserves a happy ending. Gay or straight, young or old, multiracial, multicultural, aliens, werewolves, maiden aunts, or octopus shifters. I am all about the romance, and the happily ever after.

I hope you'll jump around and see what everyone has to offer.

For my contest, one lucky winner will receive a PRINT copy of The Long Way Home! To win, please comment below, and thank you for your support! I couldn't do it without you.

I See You Shiver

With anticip-p-p-ation!

Yes. I'm a wreck. There are few things more fraught than waiting until the day you can move back into your house after major re-construction. Add that to the fact that I have to replace everything (basically, anything soft like beds and bedding and window coverings or plastic like appliances and things that I stored food in) that might have absorbed the toxic smoke that flooded my house during the fire I'm a little bit overwrought.
And yes. That's a first world problem, I know. I'm a woman who spends a lot of time on her knees being grateful that my life is good. It's actually wonderful. I've been so lucky.
But I'm due to move home the weekend before my kids start back to school. Soccer season has already started, as has X-country. My four teenagers have all discovered a passion--an obsession--for Magic the Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons so it's not at all uncommon to have six to eight teens in our apartment's tiny combination family room/living room/kitchen shouting things like "Die, demon from the underworld!" at the top of their lungs.
The air conditioner works splendidly, thank heavens, as it's been in the upper nineties here for weeks, and yet...one has to keep the windows closed all the time for it to function. See the above paragraph and then imagine the odor generated by eight over heated teens (and a labrador retriever) and you'll know that keeping the windows closed has done nothing for the ambience around here. Still, I'm grateful we're not living in our travel trailer.
I'm also grateful that we have this kind of abundance, and we're not in a tent. I'm grateful we're not living in a car. I'm not complaining as much as I'm full of nervous energy because I'm ready to dig in and roll up my sleeves and return my regularly scheduled life. It's TIME to go back to normal. It's past time.
But seriously, I'm an over fifty mother of four from a fairly conservative background, who writes gay romance novels. When was my life EVER normal???
On the work front, huzzah! I have finished all the housekeeping I needed to do. Here are the books I've re-released as Maxfield Books. These three are titles you may already have already read, but if you haven't, they've been re-edited and updated.

You can find all those books through the usual channels: Amazon, All Romance Ebooks, B&N.
Family Unit is currently Available in print through Amazon, Createspace, and All Romance Ebooks (through off site vendor Createspace.) The Long Way Home will be available in print beginning the first of September. (or sooner, if I can get it done.)
SOME IMPORTANT HOUSEKEEPING!
Because I didn't get my print version completed (until my daughter was able to format it for me, because I'm a typing monkey) Here is the winner of the Family Unit Print Version Contest from way back in APRIL. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. (Sorry for the interminable delay. Prize winners should never, ever have to wait this long!)
Congratulations to: Lisa Lisa! I've sent you an email.

How Can you "Like" me?

Let us count the ways!

I spent the weekend re-evaluating my promotional situation, and I came up with some good ideas, so if you're a ZAM fan, and you would like all the news that's fit to print, I thought I'd let you know know a couple ways you can be "in the loop."

First off, you can add this banner to your blog or webpage with a link to mine at www.zamaxfield.com

Okay, I know that's asking a lot. But if you'd like to exchange banners with me, I'll add yours to my links page. Just email me.

Also, I have a Yahoo Group, which it used to be really busy (when I had more time to be talkative.) Hundreds of people have come and gone, some are talk a lot and some lurk. I really do read each and every message on that loop, though, so if you want to see my news or share your own, if you want to talk about books or writers, or share your favorite recipes that's where you can do that. I really like it when people read a great book and they let me know so I can read it too.

I want to get back to book chat. I miss it, especially when I'm writing. The funny thing is, a lot of the readers who were on that group became writers and established groups of their own. You GO Zammers! There's plenty of room at ZAM's Cybercafe. Here's the addy:

You can "Like" me on Facebook, on my author page at Facebook, on my author page at Amazon, on any one (or all) of my individual books at Amazon or anywhere else. You can follow my blog here at blogger, just push that little orange button, I think but the mysteries of RSS feeds and things are just that to me still. You can follow me at LiveJournal, or you can just drop me a line at zamaxfield at zamaxfield dot com.

A gentle plea, dear readers: Please, oh, please "like" me anywhere you can. That means finding that little "Like" button and pushing it. It does make a difference, each and every time. Plus, it's the only way I can convince my children that I'm not making all this shit up. Also, if you can, agree with the book tags on my books by clicking on them, or add your own, at Amazon. Find out more about tags, here. That's a sure and certain way for readers to help authors get more readers.

And we all want that, don't we?

I have a Newsletter, which you can subscribe to, HERE.

You can rate me, review me, or "fan" me at Goodreads. One note about that: I never feel I can review books on Goodreads. Part of that stems from the facts that I think authors reviewing books is like political pork, somehow. Or it's a little incestuous. You can follow my reviews but I don't review much, if ever. I started out rating books with the best of intentions, but then I stopped. I thought, what do I know? I just write 'em. I don't even play a literary critic on TV.

Goodreads thinks I've been reading Shoeless Joe for a couple years. Of COURSE that book gets a 5-star rating, but I never reviewed it. I'll be sharing what I'm reading more at Goodreads and on my Yahoo Group, and I hope to hear what you're reading too. I won't share about books that weren't my cup of tea, and I don't really want to encourage criticizing books or authors. I just want to know what folks are reading out there so I can read good books too.

And finally, you can follow my tweets or tweet me at @zamaxfield. Don't worry about having to listen to endless blasts about my day or my lunch or my traffic problems. I'm not very loquacious on Twitter. I mostly use it to announce new books and to point out that I'm standing next to other, more important people at conferences and on trips. (LOVED RWA's literacy book signing by the way. So exciting to stalk meet my long time idols.)

So that's it, And hopefully, as they say: That's more than enough about me... how do YOU like me?

Notes from the edge of sanity...

We're still enjoying our extended stay in the apartment and looking forward to moving back home at the end of summer, early fall. My daughter is home from school, so six people/three bedrooms. The necessity of putting a young adult woman in a room by herself has created a fourth bedroom, previously known as the living room. A good time is being had by all.

The weather continues fine. It's hot, but nothing like the rest of the country. My heart goes out to everyone, drink plenty of fluids and stay as cool as you can!

RWA (Romance Writers of America) Nationals are right here in Anaheim, so of course I can't resist going. I'm hoping to see a lot of my pals there. I'll be the only one who looks like they slept in their own bed... LOL! Please get in touch with me by email if you're going and want to get a drink or something, I'd love to have an excuse to hang around in the bar with friends!

On a writerly news note, I'm working again! YAY!

It's been a difficult time. Prioritizing the work on the house, family, friendships, and other obligations along with the rigorous writing schedule I've been used to keeping has been nearly impossible.

My heart was a little broken and my mind has been scattered. Like... all over the universe scattered... :D

Fortunately, there is an end in sight. I have been working on a romantic comedy novel, Gasp! which will probably be a late August release from Loose Id, and I will be re-releasing The Long Way Home for the Kindle market !!! This is very exciting for me, because TLWH has been a fan favorite, but due to the collapse of a publishing company the book hasn't been available for some time.

My goal is to get this re-release version out there by midnight tonight, the end of July. Wish me luck, because I'm a typing monkey when it comes to coding. I'm STILL working on the print version of Family Unit. Of course once I get that right, the print version of The Long Way Home will follow.

Most important! I owe a great big apology to EVERYONE who entered my Family Unit print version contest. I STILL have all the entries so don't worry that you need to re-enter, but I have yet to create a good print copy of that book -- after numerous tries. One that I feel is professional enough to put on the market. There's always some gosh darn little formatting mistake or typo that makes me crazy.

I know the problem is mine, but you have my sincerest apology and I'll keep trying until I get it right. In the meantime... Let's all gaze at Hrithik Roshan, shall we?

Sighs. Hrithik always makes me feel better!

Through The Years

My latest project, a retooled, re-edited ebook version of the short story serial I wrote about Ethan Holmes and Barry Moffit, is available at Amazon for the low, LOW price of .99. The book includes all the short stories I've been offering for free on my website. 1978, 1988, 1998, 2008, and The Cursed Noel.

For several years, I've shared these stories in an unedited web only version, and it finally occurred to me that it was some of my favorite work, so it deserved professional editing and a nice cover so people could load the entire series onto their ebook readers at one go. For those of you who have read the stories, they really are a piece of my heart and it might be like a visit with old friends. For those of you who haven't, at this price point it's an excellent way to dip a toe into the Mind Of Maxfield, as it were. Part of the proceeds will benefit the folks working toward marriage equality at HRC, for whom I wrote the stories in the first place. You can find the book at Amazon, HERE

Today, I have the pleasure of hosting Katrina Stauss, one of the very first authors I read in the m/m genre and still one of my favorites!

Katrina Strauss discovered her love of romance novels with childhood peeks at her grandmother's paperbacks. As an author, she pays homage to the timeless genre with her own dark, daring twist. She currently lives with her family in Savannah, Georgia. When not writing, she watches entirely too much anime. Find out more about Katrina on her WEBSITE or her BLOG.

NOW FOR KATRINA'S EXCLUSIVE MATERIAL!

Greetings from Katrina Strauss! If you've read Blue Ruin 4: Need You Tonight, you'll recognize the following scene as the car ride from chapter twenty-three. However, this version is written from the passenger's point-of-view.

It was a bit challenging, as Dusty is blind, so I really had to put myself in the character's shoes. In fact, I wrote it three years ago as the opening chapter to Dusty's spinoff book before other projects forced me to set it on the back burner.

Maybe someday I'll finish writing that particular book. In the meantime I thought I'd publicly share this chapter, for the first time ever, as a Blue Ruin outtake.

** Exclusive outtake from Blue Ruin 4: Need You Tonight -- Dusty's POV **

Dusty knew when they'd left the city. He could tell by the cooler breeze against his face, the fresh scents of pine and grass. Even the faint hint of manure proved a refreshing change. Born blind, he'd never seen colors, yet he associated these scents with the sound of the word "green" and the pure, clear chime of crystal. The city, on the other hand, had always struck him as being a drab-sounding brown or gray. He'd mentioned this impression earlier to his friend Blue, whose colorful name held its own special connotations, while they were stuck in a traffic jam. Blue had told him those colors perfectly described the smoggy haze that had laden the city that past summer. Dusty hadn't known how to explain to Blue it was more than pollution bogging down the crowded metropolis and casting its hue on all that fell in its shadow.

Yes, it was cleaner here outside of the city, not only devoid of the stench of exhaust and fumes, but Dusty's mind was cleaner, less cluttered by the constant buzz he picked up, like radio static, of too many souls packed in close proximity, their thought-streams often as congested as the city streets, the negative ones too often tainting the good. Yes, life in the city could prove unhealthy not only for the body but the mind and, especially, the soul. It was because of this that he'd accepted Blue's offer to arrange a much-needed vacation in a smaller town, about two hours free of the tangled urban sprawl.

That, and Dusty was intrigued by the impressions he picked up whenever Blue mentioned his soon-to-be host, Cameron Carter. Although they'd never met, the mechanic had graciously agreed to let Dusty stay with him a few months, allowing Dusty time to recharge from the drain of the recent murder case he'd helped solve, one which had nearly cost him and Blue their lives. Dusty shuddered, remembering the sheer evil he'd felt as the killer's soul had risen from the shell of its former host and whispered and slithered around him, one final taunt, before taking leave. Some souls were at peace once they left the mortal realm, but not that one -- that one would be back, to wreak havoc and discord elsewhere, as would others, and so Dusty must regain his strength before he was called upon to help again.

A slight change in atmosphere charged the air. "We're almost there," Dusty said.

"Yeah," Blue confirmed. "Just passed a sign that said Bethel Ridge, one mile." When they'd first met, Blue's tone had often rang of surprise at Dusty's offhanded, accurate observations. Now, Blue seemed to accept such moments with bemused curiosity. "How'd you know?"

"I can feel the people." Unlike the city they’d just left, however, the congregation of souls Dusty sensed down the road were fewer, quieter, more relaxed and at ease with life in their simpler surroundings. Yes, Bethel Ridge could prove a welcome break.

"I'll call Cam and let him know we're close." Dusty heard the click of the cell phone being opened, the musical tones of keys being thumbed. "Hey, Cam. Yeah, we're almost there. You said turn left past the McDonald's on Wildflower Drive, fourth house on the left past the row of mailboxes." Blue paused, and his voice softened. "Yeah, it'll be nice to see you, too."

Dusty never searched inside his friends' thoughts without permission, but between plain old intuition, and the details he'd gleaned in conversation, Dusty knew that Blue trusted Cameron, although it had been a hard-earned trust, one which didn't come lightly, and that knowledge was assurance enough that he'd find sanctuary in this stranger's home. Dusty also knew Blue had been intimate with Cameron and cared for him as more than a friend, but that he held those feelings at bay, even lying to himself, so as not to hurt Derek, the man who held the strings to Blue's heart.

Dusty himself had indulged in certain pleasures with both Blue and Derek, but he also understood that no matter how open their relationship, no one could touch what the couple shared. To bask in the love that burned between them, even for only a few passionate encounters, was privilege enough. Not to mention it had been the hottest sex Dusty had enjoyed in his life.

But now Cameron -- Cameron had tried to come between them, and he'd failed. Dusty couldn't help but speculate as to how this made the mechanic feel, to have been left out in the cold, to know he could have Blue on the side but would never be Blue's first choice. It also left Dusty to suspect an ulterior motive on Blue's part in bringing him to Bethel Ridge, but again, he wouldn't pry into his friend's mind. For a born psychic, surprises were few and far between, and sometimes Dusty liked to be surprised.

The car gradually slowed. Dusty knew the choppy puffs of wind paired with intermittent engine sounds meant they were passing buildings and being passed by cars. The tires rolled to a near stop, and he felt the bump of railroad tracks before Blue sped back up.

A familiar, welcome scent filled his nostrils, making his mouth water. "There's the McDonald's," Dusty nodded in the direction of the smell.

"Okay, how the fuck did you know that?"

"I can smell the burgers. Can't you?"

"Not from two blocks back, no," Blue muttered. "And how do you know it's not some other burger place?"

"They have their own unique aroma." Dusty laughed and rubbed his stomach. “Mmm, McSmell."

Blue laughed. The McSmell came and went, but Dusty's hunger remained. He heard the rapid clicking of the turn signal, felt the car veer left. As he swung with it, the butterflies that had tickled his gut since leaving the city now hit full-force with mad flurry. His breath left him a moment, his head spun, and he knew, just as sure as his name was Dusty Sterling, that his life had veered in a new direction as well. Ah, a surprise. Dusty smiled to himself, ready to embrace and explore whatever path had just opened before him.
