Time Passages

When I was graduating from high school in 1978, the song Time Passages by Al Stewart was on the charts. I love that song so much. When you consider that album and the popularity of Stewart'€™s 1976 “The Year Of The Cat” my entire high school life was scored by two albums. Disco was just beginning to come along and suddenly, Saturday Night Fever was everywhere. I had the only boyfriend in the entire school who could swing-dance well, although he dumped me before prom and I had to scramble to find another date.

I’m thinking about all this today, because my son had his senior choir concert last night. I charged my phone, because while I have a video camera, I don’t really know how to use it. I actually own three different cameras. Unlike my dad, I never could get the hang of being behind the camera, distanced from the life I’m living by metal and plastic and glass. I never had a knack for filming what my family was doing because I preferred to participate.

My dad used to set up the cameras and make us wait upstairs on Christmas morning while he fiddled with lights and reflectors and when we opened our presents — because his camera recorded no sound, he directed us, “Give me some more surprise, honey.

I don'€™t really think I have a value judgement to add here, I don'€™t think he was less involved, or less invested in us as kids than I am with mine. He preferred to capture things, he wanted the reassurance that they wouldn'€™t disappear, while I have a pretty terrific memory and I believe, even with the best intentions, you can'€™t really hold on to anything.

So anyway, of course, my phone ran out of space just before my son marched onto the stage in a military coat, singing the Enjolras part of the One Day More song from Les Miserables. Which made me cry anyway, as it always does. I only say this to illustrate how life works. I had charged my camera, uploaded my pictures, but alas. Sometimes good intentions just aren'€™t enough.

I guess what struck me most about the evening, besides the great music our small suburban high school puts out, is that time passes, whether you like it or not. When my son was eighteen months old, he went to Montessori preschool. I mostly put him there because I could work in the office, get a break on two kids'€™ tuition, and we'd all get something out of it. He went in the early mornings, and came back to me at naptime. My daughter Zoe, who was four at the time, had been going since she was two and was turning into a first rate reader.

That year they did a Christmas program, and the under twos all got Jingle Bell Bracelets they could rock out with while singing Jingle Bells to a prerecorded track. My son didn'€™t want to leave me, and he put up a fuss until I told him while he was up there I was watching, and at the end, I'€™d give him a special sign to tell him I love him: I'€™d snap my fingers on both hands and then give him the thumbs up.

I gave him that same sign, automatically, after his number from where I was seated in the front row last night.

I know what you're thinking. How poignant! She still does that, she still remembers it and probably someday he'€™ll really appreciate it. Cause that's what I was thinking. I was thinking, yeah. Wow. I have surely come full circle.

Last night, after the finale, The Impossible Dream my son Max who was sitting next to me nudged me and said, "€œHey mom, did you see, he gave you the sign."

No, I had not seen. But now I know he did it.

A little ZAM update --

Business womanI fixed my Coming Soon page so it will accurately reflect the books that are going to be released this year. As anything comes up I’ll add it along with dates and links.

ZM_GrimeAndPunishment_covertn

I’m working even as I write this. I’m delighted with the reception for Grime and Punishment and I’m glad people are taking the characters of story to their hearts. The “Brothers” of Grime are the three owners of the trauma scene cleaning company, Jack, Eddie, and Gabe. They’re each going to get their own story. I’m also thinking about a Grime Christmas tale and a couple of free stories featuring Skippy and Kim, and the rest of the Grime Gang.

To Find Grime and Punishment, go to Loose ID, All Romance Ebooks, or Amazon.

It’s also almost time to start looking dreaming of cowboys, because My Cowboy Heart is coming out at the end of August.  For some reason I don’t see the cover on the Amazon site but here it is — isn’t it cool?

You can take pre-order My Cowboy Heart, HERE

My Cowboy Heart has a sequel, already written, with a planned release in December, tentatively titled My Heartache Cowboy, so stay tuned!.

Last but not least, expect a very California-flavored ZAM Christmas tale, Lost And Found, coming from Riptide. Details on that will follow as soon as I have them.

ZM_GrimeAndPunishment_coverinThe Brothers Grime is Jack Masterson’s way of helping people in crisis after disability ends his career as a firefighter. Jack’s people get to a scene long after the physical trauma ends. They don’t solve crime or rescue the victims. They help people move on. The new job is all Jack wants or needs, until he gets the call about old flame Nick Foasberg’s suicide.

Ryan Halloran’s cousin Nick has been on a downhill slide for a long time. Despite that, Ryan does everything he knows to help. Ryan only understands part of what happened between Nick and Jack in high school, but after Nick’s suicide, Ryan agrees both he and Jack need closure. They work together to clean the scene and despite the situation, heat flares between them.

Jack is keeping a painful secret and fighting his attraction Nick’s look-alike cousin, Ryan. Ryan calls himself a magnet for lost causes and worries Jack might be the next in a long line of losers. Despite his misgivings, despite the past and the mistakes they’ve both made, Jack gives Ryan something to look forward to, and Ryan gives Jack a reason to stop looking back, in Grime And Punishment.

Christmas!!!

I should have scheduled these posts way far ahead! Maybe next year, I'll do just that, so I can enjoy replying to comments instead of trying to add content. Live and learn!

First, I'm thoroughly enjoying my Christmas so far. We did our family tradition of watching The Muppet Christmas Carol last night, (and my son's girlfriend joined us.)

Right Now, my four teens are on the floor of the living room trading the Magic the Gathering cards that Santa left for them. They haven't even started opening their other presents, but that's the way we've always done it. I think we open presents one or two at a time, all day, or sometimes over the course of two or three days because people used to drop by, or we'd get to playing and lose track of time.

When the kids were little and went to bed early, I made overnight cinnamon rolls for Christmas morning breakfast (the recipe is at the end of this post). Last night I opted out--I was still wrapping gifts, and we got a late start! I'll probably make them for New Year's instead.

This is DAY TWELVE
of the GREAT HOLIDAY ZAMFEST!
what's in it for you?

Welcome to the twelve days of ZAMfest All you have to do is comment to enter the daily drawing and I'll pull a new name from the hat each night to win an ebook from my backlist. The TWELFTH day will be Christmas, that's when I'll put the name of anyone who leaves me a comment on all twelve blogs, into a drawing and one very lucky person will win the grand prize-- a $50 dollar Amazon Gift Card. If you're new to the ZAMfest, it's not too late to go back and comment on earlier blogs. Good Luck! I'll be picking my winner tomorrow, on the twenty-sixth, and I'll post to let everyone know who it is. If I've failed to get in touch with you and you've won something, never fear, I'll take care of the rest of business tomorrow.

DAY eleven's winner is Judi, arella3173, I'll be contacting you to see which ebook you'd like!

Thanks for playing along! I've been wanting to say, I've missed a couple of days of replying to comments, wow, with christmas this close, I had to finally stop procrastinating and go out shopping. I've dragged home the feasting foods, and caught up with some of my last minute presents, but still, I'm not quite through yet! That doesn't mean I don't love and cherish each and every comment! Thanks so much for stopping by!

Sending you the most heartfelt, warmest wishes for a joyous holiday season,

Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Glaze
by Molly Wizenberg
Yield: Makes 18 servings
ingredients
Dough:
1 cup whole milk
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 1/2 cups (or more) unbleached all purpose flour, divided
1/2 cup sugar
1 large egg
2 1/4 teaspoons rapid-rise yeast (from 2 envelopes yeast)
1 teaspoon salt
Nonstick vegetable oil spray

Filling:
3/4 cup (packed) golden brown sugar
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature

Glaze:
4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
1 cup powdered sugar
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
preparation
For dough:
Combine milk and butter in glass measuring cup. Microwave on high until butter melts and mixture is just warmed to 120°F to 130°F, 30 to 45 seconds. Pour into bowl of stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment. Add 1 cup flour, sugar, egg, yeast, and salt. Beat on low speed 3 minutes, stopping occasionally to scrape down sides of bowl. Add 21/2 cups flour. Beat on low until flour is absorbed and dough is sticky, scraping down sides of bowl. If dough is very sticky, add more flour by tablespoonfuls until dough begins to form ball and pulls away from sides of bowl. Turn dough out onto lightly floured work surface. Knead until smooth and elastic, adding more flour if sticky, about 8 minutes. Form into ball.
Lightly oil large bowl with nonstick spray. Transfer dough to bowl, turning to coat. Cover bowl with plastic wrap, then kitchen towel. Let dough rise in warm draft-free area until doubled in volume, about 2 hours.

For filling:
Mix brown sugar and cinnamon in medium bowl.
Punch down dough. Transfer to floured work surface. Roll out to 15x11-inch rectangle. Spread butter over dough, leaving 1/2-inch border. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar evenly over butter. Starting at 1 long side, roll dough into log, pinching gently to keep it rolled up. With seam side down, cut dough crosswise with thin sharp knife into 18 equal slices (each about 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide).
Spray two 9-inch square glass baking dishes with nonstick spray. Divide rolls between baking dishes, arranging cut side up (there will be almost no space between rolls). Cover baking dishes with plastic wrap, then kitchen towel. Let dough rise in warm draft-free area until almost doubled in volume, 40 to 45 minutes.
Position rack in center of oven and preheat to 375°F. Bake rolls until tops are golden, about 20 minutes. Remove from oven and invert immediately onto rack. Cool 10 minutes. Turn rolls right side up.

For glaze:
Combine cream cheese, powdered sugar, butter, and vanilla in medium bowl. Using electric mixer, beat until smooth. Spread glaze on rolls. Serve warm or at room temperature.
